Hanafuda Flash (花札 Flash) is a web game for playing Koi-Koi published in 2004 on Gamedesign.jp.
The game has both a Japanese and an English version, but the English version is no longer playable on the official website because it uses outdated Flash software. However, the game still works in the Wayback Machine on the Internet Archive.
¶ Gameplay and Rules
Hanafuda Flash is a single-player game against a CPU opponent. You start with 10 points, and the game ends when you hit 0 or 50 points. Any points you win are added to your score, and any points your opponent wins are subtracted.
The game sticks very close to classic Koi-Koi rules from early hanafuda video games, with the notable exception of including a Cards of the Month yaku. (It is one of very few sources that includes that yaku, along with games from the Yakuza franchise.)
More detailed game rules:
- The values of Bright yaku are 15, 10, 8, and 6 points (for 5, 4, Rainy 4, and 3 Brights respectively).
- Boar-Deer-Butterflies is 5 points, and the two special Ribbon yaku are 6 points each. (None of these earn bonus points for extra cards, and each can combine with their respective generic Animal/Ribbon yaku.)
- The special Sake Cup rule is used: the Sake Cup card can be an Animal card and a Chaff card at the same time.
- A Dealer’s Privilege rule is used: in case neither player manages to finish the round before the end, the dealer wins the round with 6 points.
- A Cards of the Month yaku is included, earning 4 points if you collect all four cards that correspond to the current round’s month. (Shown on the side above your score.)
- Viewing yaku are not included.
- No score multipliers of any kind are used.
- The winner becomes the dealer in the next round.
